Stacked stainless steel rings are individually PVD-coated to create the stepped gradient visual. PVD coating (Physical Vapor Deposition) introduces reactive gas and metal vapors which form a compound that is deposited on the material as a thin, highly adherent coating.

Ducati Monster 900 SS
Photos by Fabrizio Grioni

Simone Conti is an Italian based Industrial Designer who at the time of this creation was only 24 years old. What you're seeing is his first (yup) swing at motorcycle customization. Some photos of the bike were floated around back in 2013 but Simone has been tweaking and reworking it's design since then, molding the project into a much more refined and functional composition. The most striking visual is the bike's new framework - 6mm thick aircraft grade aluminum panels CNC'd into a structural design reminiscent of Ducati's trellis. These framework panels are tied into a new curved aluminum tube backbone that swoops from the steering head back, to also integrate subframe, seat, and monoshock provisions. Ohlins suspension was grafted in front and back, borrowing the monoshock and swing arm from a 1098 model. Simone was responsible for all the custom carbon fiber fairings and engine covers as well as the updated 2-gallon aluminum tank design. The exhaust routing went through many revisions. In the end Simone settled on the reverse exit design you see here. The battery and control modules were relocated behind the carbon fiber fairings while some of the other electrical components were housed under the tank. Wheels were borrowed from the Multistrada and the whole bike weighs in at about 374lbs (170kg).
Simone very deservingly took home first place at the Italian Motorcycle Championship in the Custom class.

Apparently this past Saturday was International Female Ride Day. Turns out we were already out on the bikes since it was one of the first 70+ days here in the Midwest. We blasted around some Wisconsin Rustic Roads, taking photos with the road signs. If you collect 10 roads and send in your photos you get a Rustic Roads Motorcycle Tour patch. Kara's all about patches.

Hand Embroidery

Words by Kara

Britt "Hutch" Hutchinson of Tinycup Needleworks attended our Parts & Labor Day ride last summer and grew up riding on the back of her father’s bike. As she says it, “the moto community has a dear place in my heart,” but this feature isn't really about motorcycles.
Hutch started embroidery about a year ago with the encouragement of her friends, one of whom I had the pleasure of befriending this winter at the Mama Tried Show. Shortly thereafter I came across the Tinycup Instagram and fell in love with her work. Besides her obvious artistic talent, romantic flare, clean lines, and style; I appreciate the inspiration that her tiny stitches bring. We can all pick up a new form of creative expression (whether it’s a needle or a wrench) as long as we stay curious and willing to learn.

"The mono shock was donated from a ZR750, and after doing some math was mounted on the reinforced frame and swing arm. The front end was lowered 1.5in (38mm) with a fork brace added. To better follow the new lines on the bike, the tank was raised and new mounts were made. The extra space under the tank houses the electrical components with a new custom harness tying then together. Allowing the motor to breathe better with Uni filters and 4-1 exhaust with a reverse cone muffler proved the clutch to be a weak link. Beefier plates and springs were added to handle the additional power. We raised the pegs and used tracker handlebars to adjust the riding position for the stance and improved geometry. Deciding on the paint design proved to be a difficult decision. After many ideas and renderings we landed on a matte desert tan and gloss black. We are very happy with the results and it is incredibly fun to ride. Its maiden run was up the famous Palomar Mountain and well surpassed our expectations."

This girl's been a pile of parts on the garage floor for over 3 years now. I had a free Sunday and recently free table so she got a promotion. Still turns over after 3 years. I'm going to clean out the tank and carbs next and see if she still fires up. #ranwhenparked
